10 tips to preserve your home’s air quality
-
Maintaining good indoor air quality at home is essential. Here are 10 tips to help you achieve it.
-
Poor air quality inside our homes
Bad indoor air quality is caused by everyday activities (cooking, heating, cleaning, etc.) and by the pollutants released by our objects and products (furniture, walls, candles, etc.). Given the many health risks of poor household air quality, especially for children, it is crucial to fight it.
10 tips to keep a good Indoor Air Quality:
Many solutions can be set up to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ):
1. Renew the air
Ventilating your house for several minutes and several times a day is the minimum to keep a healthy air quality at home. However, ventilation is not enough to preserve good Indoor Air Quality throughout the day. It must therefore be combined with other solutions.
2. Install a ventilation system
Today's house insulation do not allow for a proper natural air ventilation. Indoor air pollutants becomes trapped inside your home! It is sometimes necessary to install systems —such as Mechanical Ventilation— that ensure constant air renewal and thus improve your household air quality.
3. Choose low-emission cleaning products
Cleaning products emit high concentrations of air pollutants which greatly harm your home's air. It is important to choose low-emission products to preserve Indoor Air Quality. Thanks to its clear rating, the "Air Label Score" label helps you to choose products that are good for your household air.
4. Monitor the humidity level
Indoor humidity levels should be between 40 and 70%. If the humidity level is too high, mould will develop and degrade your indoor air.
5. Avoid smoking inside
You should avoid smoking inside your home because the fumes released seriously pollute your indoor air. Moreover, the smoke will accumulate in different textile materials and will be continuously released afterwards, degrading your household air quality in the long term.
6. Choose low-emission furniture
Furniture emits pollutants throughout its whole life cycle. For example, many pieces of furniture emit formaldehyde —a known human carcinogen according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)— because of the glues used in their manufacture. It is therefore important to choose furniture that will not invisibly emit such dangerous substances into your indoor air!
7. Clean your house regularly
Regular cleaning with products chosen specifically for their low emission of pollutants will improve air quality by reducing dust and mould pollution.
8. Choose low-emission building materials
Building materials’ emissions have a major presence inside homes and workplaces. In fact, they will release harmful substances perpetually! Choosing low-emitting materials is essential for keeping a healthy air inside dwellings.
9. Choose low-emission paints
Paints have two emission phases. A short-term phase (when applied) and a long-term phase; this means that, once applied to the walls inside your home, the paint will continue to emit pollutants in large quantities. It is important to choose low-emission paints to prevent a great degradation of the air you breath at home.
10. Install an extraction system in your kitchen
Cooking emits many pollutants (nitrogen monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc.). The use of an air extraction system with filter is therefore strongly recommended to maintain good air quality in this important room.
Appropriate daily maintenance
Maintaining good Indoor Air Quality does not necessarily require heavy investments. In fact, everyday actions can already make a significant contribution to improving the air in your home. The "Air Label Score" label helps you in this process by indicating which products are healthy for household air. Find here all the labelled products.
